Quick answerA roof pitch and area calculator converts rise and run into pitch angle, slope factor, and estimated roof surface area. It helps translate a horizontal building footprint into the sloped area that needs roofing material.

From roof pitch to roof area

Roof pitch describes vertical rise for a given horizontal run, often written as inches of rise per 12 inches of run. The slope factor is the ratio between the sloped rafter length and horizontal run. Multiplying horizontal roof area by this factor gives the ideal sloped surface area.

The footprint used must match the roof geometry. Eaves and overhangs increase roof area beyond the wall footprint, while dormers, valleys, hips, and intersecting sections need separate measurements. Complex roofs are best divided into simple planes and totaled.

Material allowance and roof complexity

Roofing is commonly ordered with an allowance for cuts, overlaps, starter courses, ridge details, and damaged pieces. The appropriate percentage depends on material and geometry. A simple gable roof may need less allowance than a roof with several hips and valleys.

Area alone does not determine every quantity. Shingles may be sold by bundle or square, metal panels by coverage width and length, and underlayment by roll. Convert the final area using the manufacturer's published coverage.

How to use this roof pitch & area calculator

  1. Enter vertical rise and matching horizontal run in the same unit.
  2. Add the complete horizontal roof projection area.
  3. Use the waste field to estimate purchase area and 100-square-foot roofing squares.

Formula and method

Pitch = rise/run; area multiplier = √(1 + pitch²)

The area multiplier applies to a uniformly pitched roof whose entered area is the full horizontal projection. Complex roof intersections need separate plane measurements.

Roof pitch example

A 6-in-12 roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Its slope factor is the square root of 6² + 12² divided by 12, or about 1.118. A horizontal roof footprint of 1,500 square feet therefore corresponds to roughly 1,677 square feet of sloped surface.

Adding 10 percent for a suitable project would bring the planning quantity to about 1,845 square feet. The final order should be rounded to the product's package coverage and checked against the roof plan.

Roof pitch to angle and surface-area factor

The rise and run must use the same units. A 6:12 pitch is not a 6-degree roof: its slope ratio is 0.5, which corresponds to about 26.565°. The factor below multiplies horizontal roof projection area before adding waste.

Common pitch conversions, rounded
PitchAngleArea multiplier
3:1214.036°1.030776
4:1218.435°1.054093
6:1226.565°1.118034
8:1233.690°1.201850
12:1245.000°1.414214

At 6:12, a 1,000-square-foot horizontal roof projection gives about 1,118.03 square feet of sloped area. A 10% allowance makes that 1,229.84 square feet, or about 12.30 roofing squares. Do not treat those squares as a bundle count: the bundle coverage comes from the selected product.

The square footage calculator can help calculate the horizontal area. Different pitches, dormers and intersecting planes require separate measurements before their areas are totaled.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the entire building width as the run for one roof side.
  • Leaving overhangs out of the horizontal area.
  • Applying one pitch to roof planes that have different slopes.
  • Ordering exact calculated area without accounting for cuts and product coverage.

Accuracy and practical limits

The slope geometry is exact for a uniform plane. The material estimate does not automatically measure dormers, valleys, hips, penetrations, overlap, or waste. Roof access and measurement can be hazardous, so use plans or a qualified professional where appropriate.

Method basis: Standard mathematical definitions and the assumptions stated above. See our editorial and testing standards.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 6:12 pitch mean?

The roof rises 6 units for every 12 horizontal units.

What is a roofing square?

In U.S. roofing measurement, one square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.

Does the estimate include eaves?

Only if the horizontal area you enter already includes their projection.
