Quick answerAn hours calculator measures the elapsed time between two clock times and can handle a period that passes midnight. The result can be shown as hours and minutes, decimal hours, or total minutes.

Finding hours between two times

Elapsed time is the distance from the start time to the end time. For a same-day period, the calculation is a direct subtraction. For an overnight shift, the end time belongs to the following day, so the calculation adds one full 24-hour cycle before subtracting.

Decimal hours are useful for invoices, timesheets, and job estimates. Hours and minutes are easier to read in everyday situations. They describe the same duration: 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 hours, not 7.30 hours.

Overnight shifts and midnight

Midnight is a common source of mistakes because a clock restarts at 12:00. A shift from 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM lasts four hours: two hours before midnight and two after it. When next-day handling is enabled, the calculator recognizes this rollover automatically.

If the same start and end time are entered, context matters. They may represent zero elapsed time or a complete 24-hour period. This calculator treats identical times as zero unless the dates or work policy establish otherwise.

How to use this hours calculator

  1. Choose a start and end time.
  2. Leave next-day handling enabled for an overnight shift such as 10:00 PM to 2:00 AM.
  3. The result includes hours, decimal hours, and total minutes.

Formula and method

Elapsed minutes = end time − start time (+ 1,440 minutes when crossing midnight)

The two times use the same local clock. Daylight-saving transitions are not inferred because no date or time zone is supplied.

Elapsed-hours example

For a shift beginning at 8:45 AM and ending at 5:20 PM, the elapsed period is 8 hours 35 minutes. In decimal form, 35 minutes is 35 ÷ 60, or about 0.5833 hour, giving 8.5833 hours before any break deduction.

For payroll, subtract unpaid breaks separately or use the time card calculator. A 30-minute unpaid meal would reduce this example to 8 hours 5 minutes, or about 8.0833 decimal hours.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reading 8 hours 30 minutes as 8.30 decimal hours instead of 8.5.
  • Forgetting that an end time earlier than the start may be on the next day.
  • Subtracting a paid break as though it were unpaid.
  • Using clock time alone when a daylight-saving transition affects the actual duration.

Accuracy and practical limits

Clock arithmetic is exact to the minute entered. Dates and time zones are not supplied, so the calculator cannot infer daylight-saving changes or a duration longer than 24 hours. Use the date duration tool when calendar dates matter.

Frequently asked questions

How are overnight hours handled?

When the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator adds one 24-hour day if next-day handling is enabled.

Why can decimal hours differ from hours and minutes?

Thirty minutes equals 0.5 hour, so 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 decimal hours.

Does this deduct breaks?

Use the Time Card Calculator when you need daily breaks and pay calculations.
